moving help Archives

A college freshman is in need of one main thing, a moving budget to help prepare for campus life. Many students head off to college with a few dollars in their pockets, no job prospects, and the desire to eat as much pizza as possible.

Every budget will need to be tailored to the student, but there are some things that are basic that parents should be aware and account for:

1. Gas
2. Food
3. School Supplies
4. Entertainment
5. Laundry

First off, the moving budget should include gas/travel expenses.
If the student is planning on returning home frequently, this MUST be entered into the budget. There also must be room in the budget for getting around town and campus.

Food expenses are also needed.
A student can’t be expected to ONLY eat in the school cafeteria, sometimes a pizza run, a date, or the need for something different will drive your budding scholar on to other places of food consumption.

Number 3 seems to be the one that most parents are concerned with.
No matter how many pens, pencils, notebooks, or three-ringed binders you send them with, there will almost always be a class that needs something specific for study. This may be the biology teacher that requires the students to have 180 3×5 cards. And even if you’ve sent them with 300,000 pencils, they will probably lose every single one by the end of the first semester. Your student needs to have money set aside to buy the supplies that he or she needs.

Entertainment is key to the sanity of a college freshman. Without the occasional movie or video game, the student will become rather stressed out. If he spends all of his time studying, and no time just hanging out, his grades will suffer horribly and he will be less likely to get anything out of the classes.

And last but DEFINITELY not least. Laundry needs to be added into the budget.
If your kid only does laundry once a week and has two loads, that is about $5 a week (at least). When you multiply that by about 20 weeks per semester, this seemingly small bill comes up to $100 a semester! That figure is quite conservative actually.

So now that you have a basic list of budget needs, sit down with your prospective student and figure everything up. His or her input is ESSENTIAL in this process. But it can be a fun learning experience for you and for him.

Since the rising cost of moving to another part of the country can be rather costly, consumers are always tuned to the idea of finding better, more cost effective ways to reduce that cost. A lot of time and cash is spent in moving, but always look for ways to save money, you’d be bound to find them.

Initially, you must figure out which long distance moving companies provide service to the local area where you reside. Get written estimates from several companies so that you can compare “apples to apples”. Be sure to check out the quality of the company you are choosing or you might end up with a lot of damages that could cost you more.

It is important to avoid unnecessary packing of items that are not needed. You will not only reduce your moving costs but also partly cover them.

Most companies that move nationwide offer packing services. Still, you will be able to conserve some of your resources, just plan to do a little or a lot of the packing yourself. You may ask in your local grocery store if they can give you some empty boxes.

Such boxes can be used for packing books and other small and heavy things. Purchase a tape made especially for packaging so the boxes do not open in transit. Utilize clothing for wrapping delicate items. You should label boxes that contain frail things. This way, those moving your things will be more careful with them.

It’s a good idea to label all of your boxes for you to know what is in each box. Clear garbage bags are an excellent alternative when packing linens and clothes. When it is time to start unpacking, it will be very easy for you to tell exactly which items are packed in them.

Keep those things that are relevant - things like your billfold, key chain, cell phone, and the like. If they are boxed up in an unmarked box, you will most likely have a very hard time locating them. In order for your movers to communicate you, prepare an envelope with your new contact information in case there is an update on your move while your belongings are in transit. Keep them in a visible place as to not to get them lost in the mess.

When moving nationally, it is best to find out what type of trailer the moving company will be employing to relocate your property. Do not forget, the larger a truck is, the larger a space it needs to park.

In order to be efficient, it is a good idea to reserve a right spot for parking early to fortunately not waste your money or time.

Another thing you shouldn’t forget to inquire about is elevator regulations. When you get to your new home, it would be dreadful if you had to wait around because other people are using it as it is their time to come home from work.

It would be a wise move to hand-carry items that you’ve destined to be moved with you. This will help make sure that you remember all the important things.

Remember, good preparation is key for a successful relocation. It can steer you in the right direction and save you from anxieties later.

To be certain that your stuff get to your new home in one piece and solid, you should seek out a trained professional. Still, trying to save money, many people choose to do their packing themselves.

If you decide to do your own packing yourself, do not leave everything for the last day. Start planning for your move as soon as you can, because it is a huge process, and if you wait too long, you may find yourself overwhelmed and out of time before you can finish.

Foremost of all, make a file of stuff that you require to set out for moving. Check with your transporter or ask online about probable habits to pack them. You should be especially careful about the way you pack frail objects.

Make sure you stock up on enough packaging supplies. Ask, at your local grocery or wine store for some empty cartons. These cartons can be useful when packing small items like cooking utensils, clothing, and other knickknacks. Plastic containers can also be used for this and then washed out and used again and again afterward!

When wrapping breakable items, you can use your garments and linen or you can purchase bubble wrap, too. Old newspapers are great for this! But, remember, they can leave stains on clothes and other things.

Shipping tape is needed for securing boxes and markers are handy for keeping track of what’s inside. If you label your boxes, it will be helpful when it comes to unpacking.

When sealing the boxes, make sure their tops are flat. Over packing can result in damaged products. Boxes containing the fragile items must be marked. Be sure and mark the containers of things that you need right away so that they can be a top priority for unloading.

Write your name on the top of each box to ensure that your possessions don’t get lost or unloaded at the wrong place. It is a good idea to make a list of boxes and their contents in case anything gets lost or damaged.

You will also need scissors and a sharp knife for unpacking. Comprise these items into your shopping inventory, when preparing for stuffing your belongings.

You can pack your clothes into clear garbage bags so that you see what things are packed in each bag. You should not use thin bags because they can tear apart easily. Many long distance moving companies frown upon on clients who use garbage bags to pack their possessions. Minimize their use by purchasing the thickest bags possible.

There is one final thing you must remember. Generally, your relocation company will be accountable for any damage your possessions incur during their transit to your new home. The mover is only accountable for damage done to the outer portions of the carton if this one was packed by the owner.

This means, if you do not set your belongings properly, you are accountable for the damage caused. Keep in mind that the relocation company has the right to refuse carrying a packaged that is not boxed up to their standard and will ask the customer to repack the packaged goods.

In order to avoid damage, you should double check yourself whether all the things are properly packed and all the cartons are carefully sealed.

Moving Advice for Going Long Distances

Moving your family and entire household can be a costly and extremely stressful process, especially if you are moving to a very distant state (for example, moving from Florida to California). When considering moving your household items specifically, the possibility that your household items may get lost, damaged, stolen become very real during a move. As such, it is extremely important that you take your time deciding on whether you want to move your household items yourself (via a U-Haul truck for example).

If you do decide to move your household items yourself, there are many factors that you must consider before renting a moving truck from a do it yourself moving company. The first factor is selecting a company to rent your truck from. You should probably get moving estimates and the contract terms from all of the truck rental companies you possibly can before you rent a truck. This is to ensure that you get the best rate that you can for the truck and to ensure that terms of rental agreement are favorable towards you. You should keep in mind that a company will charge a rate per mile and a fixed amount per day for maintenance and insurance.

After you select a truck rental company, you should go out to the yard where the company stores its trucks and find out how well it is maintained and how much mileage the truck can travel on a gallon of gas. On average, a 24 foot box truck gets about 8 to 10 miles per gallon of diesel fuel. You should also keep in mind that you are responsible for keeping the truck fueled on your long distance move and that the truck must have a full tank of gas when you return it to the company.

One of the worst things when making a move to a new home, apartment, or across the country is the actual move. By that I mean packing up all your stuff and getting it to the new location. It always seems to be a pain and nothing ever seems to go right, and if you hire a moving company, you are always wondering if you could have found a service cheaper. When you are moving your belongings across country or even a few states you are probably going to want to hire a long distance moving company. To make sure you find a reputable company, and get a good price for the move, there are a few moving tips that should always be followed.

One of the best tips to follow would be to ask around to people that you know that have recently done a move. What long distance moving service did they use? Where they happy with the services? Could they recommend them or another company? Your friends and family can always provide with this kind of information, especially if they have been in the same situation recently. Another tip is to compare prices on a wide range of long distance moving companies before you choose one. You never want to pick the first company that you find, you should always compare prices. One company could offer great customer service, yet be a little more expensive than the company that is not very cordial.

Personally I would go with great customer service over price, but that is my opinion. Also make sure you inquire about your moving contract with the company. Are there going to be any hidden fees? How much insurance are your items covered under in the event something happens to them during the move?

Making a long distance move can be one of the most stressful moments of your life, but if you prepare ahead and take caution, you can make it a peaceful moment.
